Our School and Association
Maud McLeod High School stands in the cool hills of Darliston, Westmoreland. A government secondary school serving its community for half a century, the school marked its 50th anniversary with the graduation of the Class of 2026 — fifty years of determination and resilience, true to the motto Determination is the Cornerstone to Success.
The Alumni Association exists to bind those fifty years of graduates together — at home in Westmoreland and across the diaspora — and to put that strength at the school's service: bursaries, equipment, mentoring, and a hand wherever the school needs one.
This Association is young and its register is being built now. Every past student who joins in the founding year will be recorded as a founding member.
The school’s fiftieth year was also its hardest. Hurricane Melissa damaged the campus and scattered families across eastern Westmoreland; staff went out into White House, Beeston Spring and Darliston to find their own students, carrying food and care packages, and taught by printed lesson packets delivered to community collection points until classes could resume. The Class of 2026 sat their examinations anyway, and the school’s CSEC pass rate rose to about 73 per cent. That is the school this Association is being built to stand behind.
Our founding principal
Rev. Noel Keith Monteith, O.D., J.P.
Founding Principal, 1976When Maud McLeod High School opened its doors in September 1976 with 350 students, the man at its head was Noel Keith Monteith. As founding principal he set the tone for everything that followed — a school in the hills of Darliston built on the belief that Determination is the Cornerstone to Success.
His career in education took him on to lead Cornwall College and G.C. Foster College, and his service to Jamaica went further still: a Government Senator from 1993 to 2007, Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture, a Moravian minister, a sportsman and a Justice of the Peace, honoured with the Order of Distinction.
He passed in April 2013. Two Prime Ministers were among the mourners at his Thanksgiving Service at Carmel Moravian Church, Westmoreland. The Association records his name here first, where it belongs.
